Cullompton Bastardy Order Book – 1821-1827

This booklet was compiled by members of the Devon Family History Society in co-operation with the Devon Records Office. The booklet provides an extract of some information and further details may be obtained from the Devon Records Office. This volume is a collection of bastardy orders for the parish of Cullompton. Normally, orders were kept with all the other poor law records as a bundle of papers in the parish chest, but these were collected and filed by the clerk to the justices and this has ensured their survival. They name both the mother and the father of the illegitimate child, and state the amounts of money the parents are required to pay. The child’s name is not mentioned, although the order states whether it is male or female. For family historians the orders are particularly useful as they may be the only surviving records to identify the father of an illegitimate child. This collection covers the period from November 1821 to February 1827.
