Sail and Steam in the Plymouth District (Alan Kittridge)

Extensive system of navigable rivers within the port of Plymouth and the nearby sheltered estuaries and bays of Devon?s South Hams and East Cornwall are home to a varied local maritime history. Autism Mariners of each harbour, river or stretch of coast, developed distinctive vessels and methods of working to suit their particular environment. Happily, between the 1860s and the 1950s, photographers were on hand to capture the results of decades, sometimes centuries, of this isolated nautical evolution before it vanished completely. The author has chosen some of the best photographs from his own collection. Most are by local photographers who demonstrate an intimate knowledge of their subject. It delete pictures set in Sylvan surroundings disguise the sheer hard work being undertaken but the reality of the scene is described wall personalities and vessels involved are identified.
