The Victorian Undertaker (Trevor May)

Second Hand Book. A Shire Album Publication. No 330.
Published 1996/2007 32 pages A5 paperback.
This little book gives the reader a glimpse into the Victorian world of mourning, packed with information; six sections cover the Victorians’ attitude to death, hearses, mourning rituals, the funeral feast, burial and state funerals, all accompanied by black and white illustrations, mainly from contemporary newspaper illustrations and tradesmen’s circulars. It’s excellent value for money, and if you’re in the slightest bit interested in funeral customs, it’s a must have. Further reading suggested.
